ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Sheffield Short Film Festival is run by Sheffield filmmakers and is following in the Steel City’s long history and tradition of celebrating cinema. By bringing international short films to the amazing and diverse audiences of Sheffield, our aim is to celebrate new and established filmmakers from around the globe and share with you the magic of cinematic storytelling through the time-honoured format of Short Film.
THE TEAM
JOE MORRIS – co-founder
Joe is a writer, director and producer from Sheffield. He has worked on various productions in a variety of roles throughout the city and the UK since he was 14 years old. He was three-time commissioned by Screen Yorkshire and the UK Film Council to write and direct short films, each of which has screened in competition both nationally and internationally.
Joe studied creative writing at the University of Nottingham and filmmaking at the Northern Film School. His latest short film We Are Dancers – his NFS graduation film – has been BIFA Longlisted for Best British Short, BAFTA Shortlisted for the British Short Film Award and nominated for a Student Academy Award.
Joe has worked and lived all over the world, and as well as his filmmaking career has trained as a nurse, working in healthcare for a number of years. He is currently developing his first feature film with Sheffield based production company, Tyke Films, along with the support of Film Hub North, part of the BFI Network.
LOUISE MARIE COOKE – co-founder
Louise is a writer, director and producer, having directed seven films, producing and working on the productions of many more. Her work often deals with complex female characters and the queer community. Her work has screened at BAFTA qualifying festivals including London Short Film Festival, Underwire Festival, Iris Prize and Frameline: San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival (Siren).
Louise graduated with a master’s degree in Film Production from the Northern Media School at Sheffield Hallam University in 2009, and during this time gained experience working with local filmmakers on funded projects, such as those produced by Screen Yorkshire.
Louise grew up just outside Sheffield in the North East Derbyshire town of Dronfield which, interestingly, is the home of the world’s oldest football club – Sheffield FC (founded in 1857) – just down the road from her parent’s house.
